The concrete slabs and bus stops defining downtown Denver's most famous pedestrian corridor are getting a massive upgrade after the City Council approved a $148,992,354 contract with PCL Construction Services, Inc.

This nearly $150 million agreement marks the largest single investment in the 16th Street Mall in years, aiming to modernize the infrastructure at 80202 before the project wraps up on December 31, 2024.

The funding covers a comprehensive renovation of the mall's core elements, including paving, utilities, and transit infrastructure. PCL Construction Services, Inc. has been selected to execute the work, which targets the stretch of the mall running through Council District 9. The scope of the project addresses long-standing wear and tear on the historic promenade, which serves as a primary artery for both commuters and tourists.

The approval process moved quickly through the legislative branch. The relevant committee voted to file the item on February 23, 2021, and the last regular Council meeting within the mandatory 30-day review window occurred on March 30, 2021. With the contract now adopted, the city can proceed immediately with the physical transformation of the area.
