For the 270 people sleeping on the dorm-style cots at Samaritan House 48th, the uncertainty of the next winter just ended. The Denver City Council voted to extend the service agreement keeping this critical shelter at 4330 E 48th Ave open through December 31, 2026.
This move comes as the city grapples with its highest homelessness count on record. With 7,327 individuals experiencing homelessness in 2025—a 12% jump from last year and an 86% surge since 2019—retaining capacity at major facilities like this one has become a matter of immediate public safety.
The council's approval adds $4,525,040 to the shelter's operating budget, bringing the total funding commitment to over $21.2 million. The agreement, originally held with Catholic Charities and Community Services of the Archdiocese of Denver, ensures the 24/7 low-barrier facility continues providing meals, case management, and emergency housing in the Glendale-adjacent area.
Located just east of the I-25 corridor, the facility has long served as a primary intake point for those seeking immediate refuge. The extension prevents a potential closure that would have displaced hundreds of residents during a period when alternative bed space is virtually non-existent across the metro area.
Residents interested in tracking future decisions regarding this facility or other homelessness initiatives can attend public meetings at Denver City Hall.
