Shoppers World and nearby industrial sites are undergoing a massive wave of fire safety upgrades, with 62 permits filed in just 45 days.

This concentration of filings suggests a coordinated modernization of life-safety systems across South Framingham's busiest commercial and industrial zones rather than routine maintenance.

The activity happened in two waves. First, on April 24, 2026, specialist Lee LeClair filed 10 permits for the Genzyme facility at 80 New York Ave and nine other properties along New York and California avenues to replace sprinklers and alarms.

The second wave hit the retail sector. On May 7, 2026, 29 permits were filed for Shoppers World (1 Worcester Rd) and surrounding sites, followed by another 23 permits for the same location on May 21. This represents a major overhaul of detection hardware and piping systems at the shopping hub.

Residents and shoppers should expect increased contractor activity and potential temporary disruptions to parking and access at Shoppers World as these systems are retrofitted.
