Shoppers World is overhauling its entire fire safety infrastructure following a surge of 39 construction permits filed in just 90 days.

This wave of activity in South Framingham indicates a coordinated effort to upgrade life-safety systems across the region's largest commercial hub, affecting both common corridors and individual retail spaces.

The project accelerated rapidly between January and April at 1 Worcester Rd. Work began on January 28 with a sprinkler system application, followed by fire alarm permits on January 30 and February 5. By March 5, electrical permits were added to the scope. The activity peaked on April 23, when 37 permits were filed in a single day.

The volume of filings suggests a complete retrofit of the building's fire suppression and detection network rather than isolated repairs. While the property saw 186 permits between 2011 and 2020, this current cluster represents a distinct spike that far exceeds the previous decade's annual average.

Visitors to the complex should expect construction noise and potential access restrictions as contractors implement these upgrades across the property.
