South Broadway is about to get a massive overhaul, transforming a decades-old corridor into a safer, multi-modal artery for cyclists and pedestrians.
Denver City Council has officially adopted a $12 million grant agreement with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to fund the South Broadway Multi-modal project. This funding unlocks a complete reconstruction of the stretch between Center Avenue and Speer Boulevard, a critical connector in the 80211 ZIP code.
The construction plan goes far beyond painting new lines on the asphalt. The project mandates the installation of a two-way protected bike lane, physically separated from vehicle traffic to reduce collisions. Alongside the cycling infrastructure, crews will rebuild traffic signals, replace aging curb ramps for ADA compliance, and enhance bus stops. The scope also includes utility design, repaving, new signage, and critical drainage and water quality improvements.
This initiative draws from a diverse funding pool: $4.76 million from CDOT, $2.4 million from city funds, and $4.84 million in federal dollars. The expenditure is authorized under the Elevate Denver Bond program (Council District 7, file number 202158587), marking a significant investment in the area's transportation network.
For residents and commuters, this means a shift away from car-centric design toward a street that accommodates bikes, buses, and pedestrians with equal priority. The approval moves the project from planning to execution, setting the stage for construction that will likely disrupt traffic patterns before delivering a modernized corridor.
