Shoppers World and several South Framingham retail hubs are replacing their fire alarm and sprinkler networks in a massive safety overhaul.

The wave of more than 200 fire suppression and alarm system permits suggests that the city's largest commercial properties are performing full-scale life-safety retrofits rather than simple repairs.

The bulk of the activity is centered at Shoppers World, located at 1 Worcester Rd. Records show the complex filed 48 fire safety permits in a 90-day window ending in June 2026, following another cluster of 42 permits earlier that spring. In total, the site has exceeded 150 filings to modernize its entire safety network.

The modernization extends to the South Framingham commercial corridor, where 54 Union Ave filed 12 safety permits during the same three-month period. These filings indicate a coordinated effort to bring aging commercial infrastructure up to current state building codes.

Residents should expect to see construction crews at these locations through the fall as they install new control panels, alarm wiring, and sprinkler heads.
